Freelance outdoor journalist, photographer and consultant John Manning is a regular contributor to some of the UK's leading outdoor magazines including TGO (The Great Outdoors), BBC Countryfile Magazine and Walk, the membership magazine of the Rambler's Association.
He specialises in narrative-style backpacking features, interview-based profiles of notable outdoors people, news features, routes, outdoor equipment reviews and more. He is also available for editing work.
Based in the Yorkshire Dales National Park – the new Pennine Bridleway canters past his front door while the Pennine Way is just a stone's throw away – he also works as an outdoor consultant, currently organising the fortnight-long 2009 South Pennines Walk & Ride Festival, to be held in September, on behalf of rural regeneration body Pennine Prospects.
John was deputy editor of TGO for 13 years; before that he worked in various editorial positions on Yorkshire newspapers, including senior sub-editor and assistant editor, for several years. John has five awards for journalism.
