The Internet and tea. That’s what motivates Sharon Knowles, the operational head for kalahariads.net, to get out of bed in the morning. Her love and passion for the Internet is put to good use at kalahariads.net, the first multi-channel digital classifieds advertising platforms in South Africa that offers buyers and sellers access to classifieds via the web, the mobile web, SMS and the Media24 stable of newspapers.
In this role as operational head, Knowles has had significant input into the business development of the pioneering classified advertising services that kalahari.net offers, and works with the team to ensure delivery on time and on budget. To that end, she remains abreast of the classified advertising trends globally and ensures that kalahariads.net remains a market leader by benchmarking them and feeding back to the team. Also responsible for implementing the Group’s care strategy to maintain performance excellence, Knowles moderates high risk categories to ensure that the adverts are safe. Her job role furthermore sees her embracing social media to assist her in increasing and building listings.
No stranger to the digital world, she was at Ananzi in the capacity of online digital manager before joining the kalahari.net business fold. Her career path has been strongly skewed towards technology having worked for the likes of Edcon as Content Manager, Incredible Connection as Channel Manager and FS Trading as Operations Manager.
Born in a town that was was then called Fort Victoria, Rhodesia and is today referred to Masvingo, she moved to South Africa in 1976 and grew up in a farming town called Balfour. After matriculating from Nigel High School, she completed a Diploma in Freelance Journalism from the Success School of Writing and also has a Diploma in Marketing from the Institute of Marketing Management. She is currently completing a Bachelor of Business Administration (Marketing) (BBAM) Degree.
As a member of the Africa Association of Marketers and the Marketing Association of South Africa, Knowles is passionate about the new channels and opportunities for communication that the digital realm has created. Armed with the war-cry ‘A leader leads by example not by force’ she is an avid blogger, tweeter and social networker, and general consumer of technology.
“Since the online world, Internet and social networking is such a passion, I often find myself treating my job more like a hobby than anything else. In my world a day does not only consist of 24 hours; there is always time to tweet, do a bit of networking and build strong professional relationships. I am an entrepreneur at heart and always find myself in starting new things,” she says.
