I graduated with a 2:1 in Journalism in 2006, and since then I have been working within Journalism and am always looking for ways to expand in the industry. Whilst I was at Uni I did a couple of weeks work experience to help me learn about the industry, my first week was spent at local radio station Wave 105, where I shadowed reporters as well as going out on my own to get Vox Pops and interview people for stories being used int the news bulletins. My second week was spent at NME Magazine in London where I learnt how the magazine was put together and got helpful advice from the writers. I also took part in one days paid work experience for BBC South where we went to film part of the general election in May 2005, we learnt a bit about political communications whilst filming the count in Aldershot, then edited the shots to be used in the daily news bulletins and a special news programme.
After leaving University I worked freelance for a local radio station, The Saint' where I was a freelance news reporter. I voiced, scripted and edited the audio for regular news packages to be included in the daily 15 minute news programme at 5:45. I also went out on stories, interviewing, researching stories, getting vox pops and sound bites all to be used within the bulletins.
After 6 months of working freelance for The Saint I went to Whistler, Canada for 6 months to work the ski season, as well as working in a restaurant I managed to get a job as a reporter for the local radio station Mountain Fm. I had regular shifts where I delivered live traffic and weather updates every twenty minutes as well as reporting on ski events happening in Whistler and the Telus World Ski and Snowboard festival which took place in Whistler village in April. I was interviewing people, editing audio and doing live cut-ins where necessary.
Since returning from Whistler I have been working as an assistant editor on Gas Installer magazine, a CORGI based publication reporting information relevant to Gas Installers including features, technical information, industry news and other information relating to gas safety.
