Stephen Starr moved to Damascus, Syria in January 2007 after graduating with an MA in international security and conflict studies from Dublin City University. From the Syrian capital he began working first as an editor at Syria Times and then as a freelance journalist.
He has reported from Iraq and more recently from Lebanon covering the 2009 elections for Middle East Times, Sunday Business Post, Asia Times and Forward Magazine Syria.
In September 2010 he was invited to participate in the Economic Union of Young European Leaders conference in Poland.
Stephen Starr has been published in the Guardian, Irish Times, Christian Science Monitor, Sunday Business Post, Los Angeles Times, CNN Traveller, Le Monde Diplomatique and The Middle East Magazine. He is also the founder and editor in chief of Near East Quarterly.
