|Full name||Richard Briggs|
I specialise in reporting on and writing features about football, rugby union, county cricket, speedway and horse racing. I am also available as a freelance sub-editor. I am happy to work throughout Somerset, Devon, Dorset, Bristol/South Gloucestershire, Gwent, Wiltshire and Hampshire. I have been a freelancer since 2010, spending the previous 16 years specialising in sports writing and sub-editing as a staff journalist working for paid-for newspapers. When I started out in the industry, in 1987, I was a trainee reporter covering anything and everything - such as council meetings, pop concerts and FA Cup ties. I still regard myself as an all-rounder, being willing to turn my hand to anything. I enjoy photography and have had numerous sports team and action pictures printed in paid-for and free newspapers. I am quick and accurate with my writing, subbing and layout - I have experience of Quark XPress and Tera GN3 - and possess a meticulous eye for detail. I am at ease meeting strict deadlines and thrive under pressure.

I joined Star Newspapers (Taunton) Ltd in 1987 as a junior reporter covering news, sport, features, leisure, motoring and property. After a year I became sports editor and general sub-editor. At the age of 20 I was responsible, in the editor's absence, for putting to bed one issue of the Mid-Devon Star. During my time with Star Newspapers I worked on their five free newspapers, their free, glossy magazine StarLife and their two one-off, paid-for titles. When the company was acquired by Taunton-based South West Counties Newspapers Ltd - now Newsquest - in late 1993 I became a general sub-editor for SWC with additional responsibility for sport in their free titles. In April 1994 I was promoted to SWC's assistant sports editor, with particular responsibility for the Bridport News and Chard & Ilminster News as well as covering for the sports editors of the Somerset County Gazette and Bridgwater Mercury/Burnham & Highbridge Weekly News in their absence. In November 1998 I took over running the sportsdesk at the Western Gazette in Yeovil, where I held a management role for the first time. I left the position of Western Gazette sports editor in April 2010, becoming freelance.
Western Daily Press editor Tim Dixon, my former editor at the Western Gazette and Star Newspapers, says: "Richard is an experienced and trustworthy journalist."
Reflecting on our time working together at the Western Gazette, Tim says: "Richard's professionalism within our organisation was exemplary and he was an impressive role model for junior members of staff."
