Wendy Gardiner has been influential in the sewing industry for many years and is an internationally accredited sewing guru. She is currently Editor of Sewing World magazine, author of a number of sewing books, writer and presenter of several new sewing DVDs.
Wendy strongly believes in sharing sewing skills and knowledge so that more people can make their own fashion and furnishings and realise they can be fast, fun and simple to create. And with today’s climate of Make do and Mend, she likes to share many tips on restyling and upcycling all of which can be done inexpensively and allows people to dip their toe into this addictive activity.
Amongst the fourteen sewing and craft books she has written, the most recent titles include ‘Sewing Bible Curtains’ and ‘Sewing Bible Slip Covers’ published by David & Charles, ‘The Complete Book of Sewing’ published by New Holland, ‘The Encyclopaedia of Sewing Techniques’, published by Search Press and ‘Start Sewing’, published by Apple.
Wendy’s range of DVDs includes a series of seven Sew Easy titles for Traplet Publications – ‘Dressmaking that’s Fast and Fun’ part 1 and 2; ‘Sewing Special Fabrics Successfully’, ‘Creative Customising’, ‘Soft Furnishings’; ‘A Guide to Sewing Machines’; ‘Easy Fabulous Feet’ and ‘Style on a Budget’, a TV-style presentation showing how to make-over a living room on a budget. In addition, she has recently produced a DVD for Simplicity called Simplicity's Guide to Successful Sewing which contains eight chapters taking the viewer through all the basic sewing techniques to get started with confidence and has written and presented a series of sewing clips for the ISEW website. All are very much hands-on productions taking readers and viewers step-by-step through many sewing techniques.
Wendy started her sewing career at the UK editor for Butterick and Vogue Patterns magazines. Whilst at Butterick, she became Publisher as well as Editor and Marketing/PR Manager, promoting sewing to other media as well as continuing to edit the pattern magazines. She continued to introduce new features, and write one-off publications for Butterick.
She left Butterick/Vogue patterns to branch out alone as a freelance, with a commission to write four crafts books for Crowood Press and has continued to gain recognition as a leader in the sewing industry.
In 1994 Wendy helped launch the ASMD, Association of Sewing Machine Distributors, handled PR for many sewing related companies and edited a magazine for Simplicity patterns. She continues to organise major national competitions, bringing many sewing companies together to help promote sewing and encourage newcomers. These have included a Travelling Fashion Show involving hundreds of schools and more recently an initiative to encourage school children to restyle T-shirts. In 2006 she bought together a number of leading sewing companies to sponsor a magazine style website. She continues to co-manage isew.co.uk, populating the pages with new projects, tips, techniques and sewing know-how, providing a ‘place to go if you sew’ and empowering people to have a go with confidence.
As Editor of Sewing World magazine (since 1997) she has continued to develop the title to become the strong market-leader that it is today. She also introduced new contributors such as Janet Moville, Jennie Rayment, Ruth Cox and Lorna Knight to the magazine, nurturing and promoting these other amazing experts so that their incredible knowledge could be shared by everyone in the UK.
