Sarah Sahim is an award-winning freelance journalist who started out writing music eight years ago at the age of 15. She has since branched out into other facets of culture and beauty because she’s incredibly talented. Side note: she’s also really funny. She has a penchant for contention and has annoyed her fair share of white supremacists.
Fiercely critical of the indie scene, she often sought representation in a world that didn’t look like her. This led to her career-defining breakout piece at the age of 20, The Unbearable Whiteness of Indie, for Pitchfork, where she challenged independent scenes for not being as inclusive as they claim to be, stating that they too carry notions of white supremacy.
Since then, Sahim had stints at Broadly and Racked as a Weekend Editor, but has spent most of her time freelance, working on projects that truly matter to her. Such a project was The Good Immigrant, an anthology of essays by writers of colour edited by Nikesh Shukla. The book was named BBC Radio 4’s Book of the Week, went on to win the Books Are My Bag Readers Choice Award 2016 and was shortlisted for the Liberty Human Rights Arts Award 2016.
Her writing can also be found in The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Paper Magazine, The Fader, and many other culture-oriented publications. She also cohosts intersectional feminist podcast Not All Women which is currently on hiatus. Her work has been discussed on BBC Radio 4, BBC News, The A.V. Club’s Podmass, The New York Times, Slate, and many others.
